Enka - A Japanese Culture Inspired Illustration

This illustration serves as an initial exploration of ukiyo-e elements within vector techniques, inspired by the cinematic world of Meiko Kaji, the 1970s Japanese actress known for her raw, blood-soaked revenge films—the very movies that later influenced Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. The piece merges scanned paper textures with vector lines, which were then rasterized to achieve a distressed, broken print effect reminiscent of woodblock printing. The blue linework evokes traditional ukiyo-e compositions, while limited color use reflects the historical constraints of woodblock printing, reinforcing the gritty, vintage aesthetic. The selective use of deep reds mimics blood, adding a dramatic and cinematic atmosphere.
